Old mechanics are still valid, so be sure you know how they work. Your opponent might not be trying to cheat, but not knowing is no excuse.
With over 27,000 different cards printed (and counting) printed over the history of Magic: The Gathering, anyone who claims to know exactly how all of them work is probably not telling the whole truth. There are some mechanics in the game that haven't been used since the '90s, and with good reason, so if an old card hits the table, it's worth taking a moment to check how it actually works.
