As a boudoir photographer, I have witnessed firsthand how the beauty industry has evolved over the years, and one of the most exciting shifts is the growing embrace of what I like to call “real beauty.” In recent years, social media platforms have begun to celebrate more diverse representations of beauty. We are seeing less focus on perfectly curated, airbrushed images and more focus on authenticity, individuality, and celebrating our bodies just as they are. This is such a refreshing change, and it has had a huge impact on boudoir photography. The rise of “real beauty” has influenced not just how we see ourselves, but how we choose to capture our essence in boudoir sessions.
What is ‘Real Beauty’ and Why Is It So Important?
When I talk about “real beauty,” I’m referring to the movement that pushes for an inclusive, authentic, and unfiltered approach to beauty. It’s about moving away from the overly polished, unrealistic beauty standards that have dominated traditional media for decades. It’s about showing up in the world as your true self—whether that means embracing your natural body, your curves, your scars, or your aging process. The focus is on celebrating who we are, instead of striving for an ideal that is often out of reach or not reflective of the diverse range of people we are.
Social media, particularly platforms like Instagram and TikTok, have become spaces where real people—ordinary women, men, and non-binary individuals—can showcase their beauty and bodies without the heavy filters and airbrushing that we were once used to. We see more and more influencers, content creators, and brands highlighting the beauty of stretch marks, cellulite, and all the things that make our bodies uniquely ours. It’s truly a revolution in how we perceive beauty, and as a photographer, it’s one that excites me.
Boudoir Photography: A Perfect Outlet for Real Beauty
Boudoir photography has always been about celebrating a person’s sensuality and confidence, but the movement toward real beauty has made boudoir even more powerful. For me, boudoir isn’t about adhering to some narrow standard of what’s considered “beautiful” or “sexy”—it’s about capturing the essence of who you are in that moment. Whether you’re posing in lace lingerie, a cozy sweater, or even something that you feel represents your soul, boudoir photography is about embracing all of the layers that make you unique.
Before this shift in beauty standards, many people were hesitant to do boudoir because they didn’t feel “perfect enough.” The idea of standing in front of the camera and showing off their bodies felt daunting. But with the rise of real beauty, the conversation around boudoir photography has shifted. Now, people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds are seeking boudoir sessions, wanting to embrace their authentic selves in front of the camera. They want to create memories that celebrate who they are right now, in this very moment—no need for perfection.
How Social Media Has Encouraged Confidence in Boudoir Photography
Social media has played a huge role in helping people build the confidence they need to book boudoir sessions. Seeing real women post unfiltered photos of themselves—whether it’s an unretouched selfie or a boudoir shot taken in a safe, empowering environment—has created a ripple effect. The more we see these types of images, the more we normalize them. And when we normalize something, it becomes less intimidating. You realize that you don’t have to look like a model or be a size 2 to celebrate your beauty and sensuality.
When you scroll through Instagram now, you’re likely to come across boudoir photographers, like me, showcasing a variety of clients. These aren’t just models; they are everyday women, all ages and body types, celebrating themselves in a vulnerable, intimate way. Seeing these images is so inspiring for others who might have never considered boudoir before. It opens up the idea that boudoir is for EVERYONE, and there’s no “one type” of woman who deserves to be celebrated in this way.
How I Incorporate Real Beauty Into My Boudoir Sessions
At Couture Boudoir®, embracing real beauty is one of my core values. My goal is to create an environment where you feel completely at ease to express yourself authentically and confidently, free from judgment. From the moment you walk into my studio, I want you to feel like you can truly let go and embrace who you are. It’s not about changing your appearance or fitting into a box—it’s about celebrating everything that makes you YOU.
When you come to me for a boudoir session, I encourage you to bring what makes you feel beautiful. It could be a favorite pair of heels, a cozy sweater, or a piece of jewelry that’s meaningful to you. I want to capture the real YOU, the version of you that might not always get the attention it deserves, whether that’s your glowing smile, your strong arms, or your body that has carried you through life’s challenges.
I also love collaborating with my clients to choose outfits and looks that reflect their unique personalities. Whether it’s playing with bold colors, textures, or styles, it’s about finding what makes you feel powerful. If you want to wear nothing but a robe, or you want to channel your inner vintage goddess, I am here for it all. This is your space to express yourself, and I’m honored to be the one to capture it.
A New Era of Boudoir Photography
We are in an exciting time when it comes to boudoir photography. Thanks to social media’s shift toward real beauty, more and more people are embracing boudoir as a way to celebrate themselves without the pressure to conform to outdated beauty standards. It’s a movement toward authenticity, self-love, and empowerment, and it’s something I’m proud to be a part of.
If you’ve been thinking about boudoir photography but weren’t sure if it was for you—let this be your sign. Whether you’ve never seen a boudoir photo of someone who looks like you or you’ve been hesitant because of perceived imperfections, I promise you that boudoir photography is for everyone. It’s about celebrating the incredible, unique person you are and capturing that in a way that makes you feel confident, beautiful, and proud.
If you’re ready to book your own boudoir session and show the world (or just yourself) how amazing you truly are, I’d love to be part of your journey. Let’s make some magic together!
xo,
Critsey
